At Derby City Eye Care, we use the latest technology to ensure the best eye care possible for our patients. Here are some of the newest additions to our office:
Digital Retinal Imaging
We now offer the optomap® Retinal Exam to all of our patients as part of our comprehensive eye care service. This cutting-edge, hi-tech camera (called the Daytona) allows us to provide the highest quality of patient care by creating an ultra-wide, high resolution, color image of the back of the eye (the retina) in less than half a second!
The optomap® Retinal Exam is fast, easy, and comfortable for all ages. Unlike dilation, there are no eye drops to make you sensitive to light or blur your vision – you simply look into the device and a quick flash lets you know when the picture of your retina is complete.
The advanced technology of the optomap® Retinal Exam helps your doctor quickly detect and diagnose any signs of retinal detachment, glaucoma, or macular degeneration. It can also indicate evidence of diabetes, hypertension, and other problems that can affect the health of the eyes.
Dr. Fowler will review the optomap® images with you during your examination, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the results. Since these pictures are a permanent part of your patient record, we will also use them to track any changes in your eye health during future examinations.
The advantages of digital imaging with an optomap® Retinal Exam include:
- Quick, safe, and painless
- No eye drops needed
- Provides detailed images of your retina
- Image resolution is extremely high quality
- Helps the doctor detect disease quickly and accurately
- Lets you see the back of your eye and discuss the results with the doctor at the time of your exam
- A permanent part of your record that helps the doctor track changes over time

Visual Field Testing
The visual field is the total area that a person can see with both eyes – from the far left side all the way to the far right side. A healthy visual field is necessary for things like sports, reading, and driving. The visual field evaluation measures the range of your visual field and helps the doctor detect any blind spots that could indicate an eye disease like glaucoma or macular degeneration.
At Derby City Eye Care, we use the OCULUS Easyfield® for our visual field evaluations. It is painless and straightforward, and no eye drops are needed. You simply place your chin on a chin rest, look into the machine, and press a button whenever you see the small flash of light. Each eye is tested separately, and the whole test takes less than 5 minutes to complete. The machine then creates a computerized map of your visual field to identify any problems.
Dr. Fowler will review the results of your visual field evaluation with you during your examination, and you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the results. Since the results are computerized, we will also use them to track any changes in your eye health during future examinations.
